April 21, 2004 -- If unending news of rampant obesity in advanced countries won't scare people into getting fit, then perhaps fantasy will. Brad Pitt recently had to buff up to play his role of Achilles in the upcoming movie release of Troy.

To credibly play his role as the greatest warrior in an ancient Greek world, during of a golden period of warriors, marathons and Olympics, Pitt had to endure months of intense physical training. He trained regularly with a personal trainer to buff up for a larger-than-life image. In addition to the pain of the physical training, he also had to quit smoking cold turkey – all in all, a more healthy Brad Pitt.

In a recent interview with the German magazine Cinema before the upcoming May, 2004 release of the film in the U.S. and Germany, Pitt said he spent many unpleasant months working out with a fitness trainer to build up his muscles.

"I had to quit smoking," Pitt said when asked about the hardest part of the getting ready for the film. "I'm now happy about it because these things were killing me. But at first I was really missing my cigarettes.
