Schwarzenegger Wants to Make California the "Fitness State"

(06/24/05) Schwarzenegger came to the U.S. and California and profited from fitness. Now he wants to get all 36 million Californians in shape, forms a new nonprofit, privately financed organization to run it.

June 24, 2005 Anaheim, CA -- Current California governor and former championship bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, officially launched the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports with a made-for-television event at Disney's California Adventure theme park.

"They are going to help us pump you all up and get California in shape," the governor said. "The purpose of this is to promote health and fitness and to promote sports all over the state of California and to make everyone - all 36 million - participate in fitness and sports activities."

"Let's make this not only the Golden State," he said. "Let's make it the fitness state."

Even though previous governors had fitness councils, the one Schwarzenegger helped launch is a new nonprofit, privately financed organization.

Founding director Judith Kieffer said the council had raised $550,000 for this year, mostly from its corporate supporters, American Media Inc., Applied Materials Inc., Blue Cross of California Foundation and Pfizer.

She said the council will promote fitness with its Web site, www.ActiveCA.org, and will distribute promotional materials to retail outlets around the state urging Californians to get in shape.

"In this era of obesity, we have some real issues and health concerns for our state," she said. "We want to be able to come up with physical activities they can do as part of their normal life."

In creating the fitness council, Schwarzenegger is fulfilling a campaign promise to encourage exercise and returning to his roots in physical fitness.

"Physical fitness is one of the driving forces that brought him here to the United States, and it opened doors for him," said the governor's spokeswoman, Margita Thompson. "He hopes to continue that passion and spread that passion to California."

Schwarzenegger came to the United States from his native Austria in 1968 to pursue a championship bodybuilding career.

Even though Schwarzenegger admitted to using steroids to develop his prize-winning physique, former President George Bush appointed Schwarzenegger chairman of the president's fitness council after Schwarzenegger campaigned for Bush during the 1988 presidential election.

Schwarzenegger turned what had been a mostly titular role into a starring one, staging the "Great American Workout" on the White House grounds and traveling around the country to urge Americans to exercise.

Took an Active Role in California's Fitness

After Bush's 1992 defeat by Bill Clinton, Schwarzenegger became chairman of former Gov. Pete Wilson's Sports and Fitness Council.

At one event, Schwarzenegger even persuaded the usually reserved Wilson to perform push-ups on the state seal. Photos of the two exercising appeared around the state.

Schwarzenegger will serve as the honorary chairman of the governor's fitness council. Other celebrity athletes are expected to promote it around the state.
